How often should you clean your carpet?
A realistic schedule for homes, pets, allergy sufferers and offices, plus the signs that a carpet needs cleaning sooner than planned.
There isn't a magic number, because it depends on who uses the carpet and how. But here's a sensible starting point.
A rough schedule
| Situation | Vacuum | Professional clean |
|---|---|---|
| Typical home, no pets | Weekly, or twice weekly in busy areas | Every 12–18 months |
| Home with children | Twice weekly | About every 12 months |
| Home with pets | Several times a week | Every 6–12 months |
| Someone with dust allergies | Several times a week, with a good filter | Every 6–12 months, with medical advice |
| Guest bedroom or little-used room | Every week or two | Every 18–24 months |
| Office, high-traffic areas | Daily | A few times a year |
| Office, quiet areas | Regularly | About once a year |
Consider this as a guide, not a rule. Your carpet manufacturer's care guidance takes priority, and some warranties mention professional cleaning, so it's worth checking if yours is new.
Why Hong Kong can need more frequent cleaning
Humidity. The Observatory's monthly averages run from 70% in December to 83% in April and May. In damp months, carpet can feel less fresh and can start to smell sooner. Mould and dust mites both prefer these conditions.
Dust and traffic. Busy streets and shoes indoors bring in fine grit. If your household takes shoes off at the door, you already have a head start.
Small spaces. In a compact flat, people walk on the same few square feet again and again, so wear and soiling are concentrated in a small area.
Timing it well
The best time for a professional clean is when you can dry it easily. In Hong Kong, that usually means autumn and early winter, when humidity's at its lowest. October to December are the driest months of the year on average. It's also useful to clean before the damp season arrives, so there's less dust and food debris in the carpet going into spring.
Of course, a stain or a problem won't wait for good weather. If you need to clean in spring, plan on using air-conditioning or a dehumidifier to help with drying.
Signs you shouldn't wait
- Walkways look grey or darker than the rest of the room
- Dust rises when you pat the carpet
- It smells stale or musty, even right after vacuuming
- It feels gritty or sticky underfoot
- Someone's allergy symptoms are worse in that room
Don't leave it too long
Waiting costs more in the end. Grit wears fibres away, and that damage can't be undone. A carpet cleaned regularly also takes less time to clean, while one that's been left for years usually needs deep cleaning.
