Carpet cleaning in Hong Kong
A proper carpet clean is mostly about what happens before and after the wash. Here's how we approach it, which method suits which carpet, and how to get a quote.
Carpet takes a beating in Hong Kong. It holds on to fine dust from busy streets and the air-conditioning, and our climate means it may rarely feel fully dry between late winter and summer. The Hong Kong Observatory's long-term averages put mean relative humidity at 78% over the year and 83% in April and May. Keeping a carpet clean here isn't only about appearance. It also affects how the room smells and how long the carpet lasts.
What a professional carpet clean involves
Our work follows four stages, each with a specific job:
- Dry vacuuming. Most of the soil in a carpet is dry grit. Taking it out first stops it turning to mud when water is added.
- Dust removal. Fine dust settles deep in the pile, where a household vacuum struggles to reach it.
- Hot water extraction. Hot water and a suitable cleaning solution go into the pile and are immediately pulled back out, along with the dirt they've loosened.
- Carpet rinse. Detergent left in a carpet makes it sticky and helps it get dirty again faster, so we rinse it out.
You can read more about each stage on our carpet cleaning process page.
Which method suits your carpet?
There's no single best method for every carpet, and anyone who tells you otherwise is probably selling the only machine they own.
| Carpet | Usual approach | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Fitted nylon or polypropylene | Hot water extraction | Good airflow while it dries |
| Office carpet tiles | Extraction or low-moisture cleaning, by area and schedule | Too much water can affect tile adhesive |
| Wool carpet or wool rug | Cooler, gentler washing with wool-safe products | Slow drying, colour run, shrinkage |
| Silk, antique or hand-knotted rug | Assessed individually | May not be suitable for on-site cleaning |
| Jute, sisal and other natural plant fibres | Very low moisture | Water can mark or brown them |
If you aren't sure what yours is, a photo of the label and the backing is usually enough for us to get started. We go deeper into the differences in our guide to carpet cleaning methods.
Cleaning for homes and for businesses
The technique may be similar, but the job isn't.
At home, what usually matters is pets and children, allergies, a heavy sofa that can't easily move, or a lift barely wider than a rolled rug. Our residential carpet cleaning page covers this.
For businesses, it's about timing and appearance. A hotel corridor can't shut for a day, and an office can't have wet floors on Monday morning. See office carpet cleaning for workplaces, and commercial carpet cleaning for hotels, shops, restaurants and clubhouses.
Why drying matters so much here
Wet cleaning done badly can leave a carpet worse off. If moisture stays in the backing for too long, the result can be a musty smell and conditions that favour mould. That's a particular concern in Hong Kong, so we treat drying as part of the job. It means removing as much water as we can during extraction, and then planning for airflow using windows, fans or air-conditioning as your space allows.
If damp is already a problem where you are, tell us. Our article on carpet, mould and humidity in Hong Kong explains what to look out for.
What it costs
Prices depend on the area, the fibre, the soiling and how easy your building is to work in. A small rug and a 2,000 sq ft office are completely different jobs, which is why published rates in Hong Kong vary so much. Our carpet cleaning cost guide explains the differences and what to send us for an accurate quote.
What we'll be straight with you about
- Some stains won't come out. Bleach marks and dye damage are changes to the colour of the fibre, not dirt sitting on top of it.
- Cleaning doesn't repair wear. A worn path can look much better, but flattened or damaged fibre won't grow back.
- Odour can go deeper than the carpet. If pet urine has reached the underlay or floor, surface cleaning may not fully solve it.
We'd rather tell you this before we start than explain it afterwards.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best way to clean a carpet in Hong Kong?
For most fitted synthetic carpets, thorough dry vacuuming followed by hot water extraction gives the deepest clean. Delicate or dye-sensitive fibres may need less water or a different approach, which is why we check the material first.
Is steam cleaning the same as hot water extraction?
In the carpet trade, yes. Steam cleaning is the everyday name for hot water extraction, which rinses the pile with hot water and removes it by vacuum. The carpet isn't actually cleaned with steam.
How often should carpets be professionally cleaned?
Many households manage with a clean every 12 to 18 months, and more often with pets, children or allergies. Busy office areas may need several cleans a year. Our guide on how often to clean a carpet goes through this in more detail.
Do I need to move the furniture first?
Clear small items, and tell us about heavy furniture when you enquire. We can plan around large pieces, but anything fragile or valuable is best moved beforehand.
Can you clean carpets in a building with restricted contractor hours?
Yes, as long as we know the rules in advance. Let us know about lift bookings, loading areas and permitted working hours when you ask for a quote.
