Carpet deep cleaning for neglected carpets

When a carpet has gone years without a proper clean, a quick wash won't reach most of what's in it. A deep clean goes through every stage, with extra attention on the worst areas.

Some carpets just need a routine wash. Others have spent years absorbing dust, spills and footfall. A carpet might come with a flat you've moved into, or it may be at an office where no one remembers the last clean. Deep cleaning is for these situations.

Signs that a carpet needs it

  • It feels gritty, or leaves dust on your feet
  • It looks grey or flattened along the main routes
  • It smells stale even after vacuuming
  • It feels sticky from old residues
  • You've moved in and don't know its history
  • It hasn't had a professional clean in several years

What a deep clean involves

1. Dry vacuuming, more than once. A heavily soiled carpet holds a surprising amount of dry dirt. Removing it first is the most important part of the job.

2. Dust removal. Fine dust ground into the pile gets lifted out, as much as possible.

3. Pre-treatment. Traffic lanes and oily areas get a suitable product and time to work.

4. Spot treatment. Stains are handled individually, according to what caused them.

5. Hot water extraction. Extraction rinses out the loosened soil, with extra passes where needed.

6. Carpet rinse. This clears cleaning agents and old residues, so the carpet doesn't quickly get dirty again.

7. Drying. With more passes, drying needs more attention. We'll plan airflow with you.

Before and after a move

A deep clean is often worth doing when you move into a place with carpets you didn't choose, or when you're handing a flat back. For more, see carpet cleaning before moving out.

Where we often recommend it

  • Flats with an unknown cleaning history
  • Offices and shops that haven't had a clean in years
  • Homes with pets where a normal clean hasn't dealt with the smell
  • As a reset before starting on a regular office maintenance plan

What it can't do

A deep clean takes out soil. It can't replace what's gone. Worn fibre, faded colour, bleach marks and burns won't be reversed, and removing the dirt can occasionally make them easier to see. If damp from a wall or floor is causing mould, that needs to be fixed first, or the problem will come back. See carpet mould and humidity in Hong Kong.

We'll tell you if we think your carpet has reached the point where replacement makes more sense than cleaning.

What affects the price

Deep cleaning takes more time than a routine clean, so it costs more for the same area. Size, soiling, fibre and access are the main factors. See our cost guide.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if I need a deep clean rather than a normal clean?

If the carpet hasn't been cleaned in years, feels gritty or sticky, smells, or looks grey in the walkways, it probably needs one. Send a photo and we will tell you what we think.

Will a deep clean make an old carpet look new?

It can make a big difference, but it can't restore worn fibre or faded colour. Removing the soil can sometimes make wear easier to see. We will tell you what to expect.

Should I clean or replace my old carpet?

If the fibres are worn through, the backing is failing, or there is mould from long-term damp, replacement may be better. If the carpet is sound but dirty, cleaning is usually well worth trying first.
